A woman who went to meet a man for the first time was  attacked by him, Springfield police said.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

A woman was slashed in the hands on Sunday afternoon when she went to the home of a man in the 2000 block of North Prospect Avenue, according to Springfield police.

The man and woman were meeting in person for the first time when he came at her with a knife.

"As far as I know, they met on the internet. I'm not sure how or why, but this was the first time they'd ever met," said Springfield Police Lt. Scott Umbarger.

Umbarger said, after the man whipped out the weapon, he and the women struggled and that's when her hands were cut.

The woman ran away, jumped in her car and drove to a nearby church to call authorities.  The attacker lives in the top story of the home.

Officers waited for a search warrant to enter the man's home.  He wasn't immediately arrested because police couldn't find him.
