Emily Scott finishes second at the Olympic speed skating trials to make Team U.S.A.

This winter the Ozarks has a local girl to cheer on at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Coming into Saturday, Springfield native Emily Scott wasn't on the U.S. women's speed skating squad; but it had one roster spot to fill.

The 24-year-old finished second in the 500-meter event, just behind U.S. short track stand-out, Jessica Smith.  It was the sprint to the finish that landed Scott on her first Olympic team.

“I’m speechless,” Scott said on NBCSN after learning she made the roster.  “I didn’t even know until my coach brought me over and congratulated me. It’s been a long time coming.”

The Hillcrest grad was featured on KY3 when she was ten.  In 2000, she was zipping throughout Springfield on in-line skates.

Now, she'll be gliding for her nation when the Winter Olympics start on February 7.  The games can be seen on KY3.
