A 28-year-old man was killed at his home near Republic Road in south Springfield on Friday morning.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -

The man who died at a home in south Springfield early Friday was Austin O'Neil, 28.  Springfield Police Lt. Greg Wheelen said officers were called to O'Neil's home at 4051 S. Fort Ave. at 2:59 a.m. Friday for a report of someone having been shot.

Police said O'Neil appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head.  They don't believe the shooting was random.

O'Neil was a father of two children and a student at Ozarks Technical Community College.  His family and friends were in the home during the day but did not speak to reporters.

Police say they have no leads on a person of interest yet, and the investigation is ongoing.  It appears the shooting was in the garage of the duplex.  Tire tracks in the yard may be evidence that the shooter sped away from the scene.

A police department spokeswoman said the shooting is not connected to two deaths at a home on East Norshire Street early Friday.

Investigators request that anyone with information regarding the case contact the Springfield Police Department at (417) 864-1810 or Crime Stoppers at 869-TIPS (8477).
